  How to identify a plant from a photo

  Photo identification compares leaf shape, venation, stem structure and any flowers against known species and returns a ranked list of probabilities. How good that result is depends mostly on the photo: one plant, sharp focus, daylight and a plain background raise the hit rate substantially.

  The most common cause is overwatering: when the soil never dries, roots run out of oxygen and the plant sheds leaves from the bottom up. But there are six separate causes, and you tell them apart by which leaves are yellowing and how wet the soil is.

  The most reliable above-ground sign is a contradiction: the plant wilting while the soil is wet. Confirmation only comes from lifting the plant out — healthy roots are firm and pale, rotten roots are brown-black, soft, and their outer sheath slips off when squeezed.
